Human rights (Chief Joseph)


He was born in 1840 and he was called Joseph by
Reverend Henry H. Spalding (1803-1874) who had
established a mission amongst the Nez Perce in 1836.Also
chief Joseph died from heart failure 1904.

What Chief Joseph is famous for?


Chief Joseph (1840-1904) was a leader of the
Wallowa band of the Nez Perce Tribe, who became
famous in 1877 for leading his people on an epic flight

Why is Chief Joseph important to American history?


In order to save his people he began a retreat. He hoped to
make it to Canada where he would meet up with the Sioux tribe
of Sitting Bull. The retreat of Chief Joseph is called the Nez Perce
War. It is often considered one of the most masterful retreats in military
history.


Chief Joseph was born a member of the Nez Perce tribe of
Wallowa Valley,Oregon in 1840. His Nez Perce name was
Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt which means Thunder Rolling
Down the Mountain. Young Joseph was the son of Joseph
the Elder, the local chief. He grew up close friends with his brother
Ollokot.
